Turbo 5.0 Swap with a Junkyard 5.0. Thanks Nibbles for finding the correct emissions regulations documents. Gonna try to get it done by Summer 2017. My timing cover leaks about a quart every 3000 miles. I think I’ll just let it leak until then. No more engine work on my Ranger unless I absolutely have to until I can start the V8 swap.

5 liter V8
270hp
Honestly I think the recession was the best thing that ever happened to the big three.
Nonetheless, I love swaps like this. Sounds like it could be a lot of fun (or a nightmare)

It will. Just a small pita to get that motor in.

Is...is the turbo really needed? That’s just unnecessary complication and added unreliability on a decently powerful as it is V8. Hell even a supercharger would be a better option.

Why not just buy a running 5.0 and skip the rebuild?

Because I have a few turbos already. And that 50-60 hp gain is noticeable.

Don’t forget to factor in the cost of a transfer case adapter.

You have a few, but do you have any idea how complicated it is to set up and route a turbo?

Is the engine bay roughly the same as a same-year Explorer? IIRC the Explorer used the 302 during that time period in addition to the 4.0.
Also, if you’re gonna do all that work, at least spend more than $40 on oil and a filter ;)

I’m gonna say it again: Supercharger. Much easier to set up than routing turbo BS.

Why not modular?

You forgot brakes and suspension. You’ll be going faster, so you’ll need better brakes to operate safely. Also the V8 weighs more so suspension designed for a 4.0 will sag.
Also I hope you don’t plan on running this with a 7.5 rear.

if 270hp is your goal, then forced induction is a major pain you can do without. If you’re going to rebuild it anyway, have comp cams spec you out a bigger and better cam, get some higher compression pistons, better intake manifold, and some headers. 300 hp should be doable on the stock heads and will be all a T5 can handle. if you’re serious about this project, then a simple N/A build is your best bet to put a smile on your face at the end of the day.

Given that I have no idea what your skill or experience is, I have to ask if you’ve done a turbo build before.
Slant6

Wait, why not just turbo the 4.0?
I’d also like to remind you that you don’t need any of this, not even a rebuild of your 4.0. It’s a truck, drive it to the ground.

That thing will eat T5s like candy. Also, no clutch/flywheel? This is a cool idea and all, but look at doubling your budget to be realistic. You’ll need a TwEECer or similar for programming fuel tables, air-air IC, headers or something to adapt a turbo too, clutch quad, adj cable, among other things.
Not sure if your truck is stick, but if not, you get to cut a hole in the floor, put in a 3 pedal setup, figure out how/where to mount the clutch quadrant, punch a hole in the firewall, run a cable, etc.
Being at altitude, forced air is a good idea but adds a lot of complications. I would build a TW headed NA 5.0, but I’m at sea level. Just bolt on a Vortech S-trim with an FPR to it, add an AOD (and off the shelf well built 2200 ‘vertor) w/Baumannator controls, and walk away. Basic late 90s junk which you can find a lot of used parts on the Corral/Craigslist. Or keep a stack of T5s around like cordwood.

I have a 5.0 mustang and I’m on my 4th t5. I would highly recommend a better transmission especially if you are going turbo....That said I have a Gforce t5 that needs a new 3rd gear....it’s 28 spline input shaft with a 2.95 first gear, I also have 2 stock t5 cores ready to rebuild.

But you can’t build a Junk Yard Supercharger setup for cheap.

If there’s one thing that says ticking time bomb, it’s the term “cheap junkyard turbo”

Ehh, just get another one when the turbo blows, or start with a Holset turbo. Turbos break all the time hell my TDI jetta’s went at 85,000 miles on a factory stock car. Dealership wanted $4000 to fix it, Aftermarket trubo, exhaust, and tune was only $2k. When things like turbo break it’s just a sign that it’s time to upgrade.

Ageed.
Also fuel system, tuning, misc supporting hardware gets very expensive. A decent wastegate and BOV are expensive by themselves.

Modulars are fucking HUGE
And the ranger requires clearancing for the little 302 as it is.

It’d be waaaay easier to get that power using NA goodies such as GT40p heads and an E303 cam.

Agree with Logansteno. Turbos are a pain to plumb for NA engines. You also need to add an intercooler, plumbing, blow off valve, boost controller, new injectors, among other things. A centrifugal supercharger is leagues easier to install and will provide a better boost profile for a torquey V8 like the 5.0.

for 3k you can get a good running 5.0 that will make more than that. Also T5 is garbage when you add extra power too it. Need a built one

T56, Tremec TR=-550.....nothing cheap sadly. The other option is do what i do and always have a spare....at the moment my spare needs to be rebuilt. Astroperformance.com has some strong rebuild options. Better than Geforce’s gear sets for sure.

Also don’t get a t5 from a v6 or 4 cyclnder you want to try to find a WorldClass t5 out of a later foxbody 5.0 or cobra. There were also some turcks with t5 that’s a bit stronger but even the strongest factory t5 is only rated for 300 lb./ft
